  1. Option 1- Hidden Gems: The public place my focus would be on is a concert venue in Columbus called Double Happiness. It is very small, similar to the size of our classroom. I have not met many people who have been here, even though it is one of the coolest venues I've ever been to. I have met so many nice people there, including now two of my best friends. I found out about a month ago that the venue is getting shut down, and this broke my heart. I know how much this venue means to not just me, but many of my friends. I want to show the impact that this place has had within a small community of people.

Option 2- Review Essay: I would choose to review the documentary film "Fresh." I would refer back to the Curious Writer and prove the effectiveness, or ineffectiveness of the film, and also talk about the different appeals they used throughout it.

  2. Option 1 - Hidden Gems: A public place in our local area that I feel is undervalued is the Columbus Crew. The Crew is so undervalued in Ohio that its come to a point where the owner of the team wants to move the team entirely out of Ohio and start fresh in Austin Texas. The Crew not only has value to the people of Columbus but major league soccer as a whole including the united states men's and women's national teams. Being a fan over several years I think I would be able to analyze and interpret the different appeals that attract regulars to crew games every weekend along with the passion and determination they have to keep the Crew in Columbus.

Option 2 - Profile Essay: In this essay I would write about one of my colleagues named Jorge. I would focus on the life lessons he has taught me for example work ethic and also his personality and origin. I have a few people i could interview about him from his brother to other colleagues who love to work with him equally as much as I do.

  3. Option 2 - Issues That Impact - In this essay I would write how gentrification has a negative and positive effect in the communities around us. Gentrification brings wealth to those who own property and land, but negatively effects those who are poor, minorities, or just not in a position of privilege. In my opinion, gentrification causes more harm than good so I would be arguing against it.

Option 4 - Review of Fresh - In this essay, I would write a review of Fresh and all of the different perspectives that the film displayed. I would refer back to The Curious Writer to help me write a good review and essay for this option.

  4. Option 4 - Review: For this essay I would write a review of Fresh by using the review techniques I have learned throughout The Curious Writer to analyze and critique the presentation of the film.

Option 2 - Issues That Impact: For this essay I would choose to write about gender inequality, especially inequality in pay that many women experience. I would focus on presenting possibly solutions to this problem as well as stating clear evidence as to why it happens and how unfair it can be.

  5. Option 1- Hidden Gems: In the town that I'm from, Cardington, there is a shut down bridge. I live right down the road from it so I may have more of a personal connection that with others, but I know many others in the town visit it frequently. It used to be a beautiful spot, the water is deep enough for swimming and fishing, but the township made the decision to leave the bridge as is and make no plans for fixing it. This spot holds so many happy memories for me as well as others that live close, and watching it slowly be destroyed is hard.

Option- Issues That Impact: For this essay, I would argue the importance of a fine arts education. Sadly, it seems that when cuts must be made the fine arts are the first to go. I'd like to show the significance that fine arts has, and how we can solve this problem.

  6. All five of you who have brainstormed so far have some nice topics. For Hidden Gems it has to be off the beaten path and not mainstream. You could also so a straight argument photo essay too as we see in the chapter on Argument. Since this is a short essay, make sure you get specific with topic. For example, gender inequality or a glass ceiling for women is a huge topic. Narrow it to one occupation or calling? Narrow it to Ohio or the Midwest? Hope these comments help and keep working to find the scope and subjects that will work for you.

  7. Option 4- Review of video Fresh, I would show the different points established in the video their arguments, if they are valid, and accredited, and then look deeply for a bias and expose it showing how certain aspects such as background music and the portrayal of certain points in the film to bring a negative view or positive one to that side. Then use the Curious Writer to reference back to and make a solid review for the video.

Option 2- Issues that impact, I feel a huge issue that is impacting society is the lack of the use of role models in younger individuals, I feel that more and more younger individuals are falling to the beaten path because they haven't found someone to look up to or strive to be like and they are left with little to no good motivation to accomplish anything and they spend their days just going through life. I feel that with a role model many would be motivated to be like someone, make a change, or better themselves and this could be a huge improvement to our society.

  8. Option 3- Profile, I think it would really be fun to write a profile essay about someone I care about. I have many influential and amazing people in my life, it would be cool to share the view I have of them. A hard decision would be who I would talk about or what memory I would talk of, however I think it would be enjoyable.

Option 2- Issues that Impact, So many people in this life are told they need more in their life. This society says you need bigger and better! A lot of people have a problem of not being content with what they have. Recently I have done a bible study with some of my family about contentment and it has really opened my eyes to all we complain about and take for granted. I think it would be interesting to try and argue that not being content is a big issue in today's world.

  9. Option 2- Issues that impact, I think one of the main issue in todays society is the obesity of kids. Socially, its no secret that overweight kids are going to be subject of ridicule from their peers. This can result in low self esteem and depression. Then there are health concerns like high blood pressure and diabetes.
Psychologically and physically, obesity is an issue that can be resolved with a simple increase in activity and awareness.

Option 1- Hidden gems, I think that Door county in Wisconsin is a hidden gem. It has limitless nature-seeking opportunities and there are lighthouses which we can climb. It is a 104 year old peninsula state park and hosts a variety of activities like bike trails and golf courses. If you want to relax and you are a nature lover, this can be be called as heaven for you.

  10. Option 2 Issues that impact, I think a big issue in society today is global warming and the risk it puts on our environment and how it actually effects our living and what our lives will look like in the future. Many people know about this issue but some people dont believe it or are unwilling to accept it.

Option 3- Profile Essay I think it would be really inspiring for me to write a profile on one of my friends that has become like family to me that has influenced my life beyond words and has helped me through really rough times and still helps me to this day.

  11. Option 2: Gun Control
Gun control has always been a controversial topic, with some feeling that guns endanger the public and some saying that they keep us safe from the government and criminals. I would like to write about the pros and cons of both sides, and give my stance on the subject.

    Option 4: FRESH
Fresh was an intriguing film, presenting a well thought-out argument on our agricultural system, having a heavy emphasis on logos. However, it suffered from a heavy bias, and failed to properly address counterpoints to it's argument. I would like to touch on what it did right, and what it did wrong.

  12. Option 2: In sociology, we're actually talking about gender in society. We're talking about how society has built 2 different ways people view women- the hardworking type (these women are viewed more manly, doing men's jobs) and the overly sexualized woman. I would like to look back on how this came about and still affects women today.
Option 3: I would like to profile my grandma who has had a hard time with diabetes. A few weeks ago she was hospitalized for kidney failure and know she has to go to dialysis 3 days a week. She manages to stay strong through it all and I really admire that.

  13. Option 2, ISSUES: I would focus on the issue of recycling and environment. The need of reducing, reusing, and recycling to help the planet will be my topic. I will address how many don't think it is an issue, when in reality it is an issue that needs to be acted upon.

Option 4, FRESH: I would review the documentary's focus on the evolution of farms, people interviewed, and the value of food. I also would talk about its use of logos and pathos.

  14. Option 4: I would write a review of Fresh and analyze the film and the way it was presented to me as a viewer and I would use the techniques given to me in The Curious Writer.

Option 3: I would write a profile of someone that I admire and aspire to be, I have many people in mind including my former soccer coach and my dad.

  15. Option 4: Referencing the methods written in The Curious Writer, I would review Fresh and all the information that is given in the documentary.

Option 3: I would write a profile essay on my grandfather, his business ventures, and how he has been an inspiration to me.

  16. Option 3 : I would want to write a profile on someone close to me to show others what influences this person has had on me and helped me grow into the person who I am.

Option 2 : Issues I want to write about the issue of alcohol abuse and how it has affected my life and family because I want to share this part of my life through writing because I feel writing can help me express this experience in my life

  17. Option 2: Argument Essay; I would want to write a paper on America's privatized prison system and the possible "Prisoner quota" that some argue it creates, and compare it to public prison systems.
Option 3: Profile Essay; I would want to write a profile on Ajit Pai, current FCC chairman. He has been in the news a lot recently and it would be interesting to learn more about him and what he had done before he was in the position he is in today.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Option 2- Feminism
I think this is a topic widely expressed throughout the past few years. Two extreme sides occur: Home-maker and Free Women. I would be taking the side of Free Women because of the in-justness of women's rights.

    Option 3- Profile
I would want to profile someone who I find to be mysterious and unravel the string of hidden stories of their life. This would help with reaching out and becoming more social.

  19. option 2- gun control: this is a very controversial topic, with most people falling on one end of the spectrum or the other.
option 3- i would write a profile on someone who has done lots of good in the world, to see their motivation.

  20. From John after deadline:

    Brainstorming Essay III

    TOPIC ONE - HIDDEN GEMS

One place that has always been considered a hidden gem to me is a music venue known as The Basement. I am putting on my first performance there this December the 16th. I have watched my cousin's band play there a decent number of times, and people just give this venue a really bad reputation because of how beat up it is, but to me, that is what makes this venue so special.

    TOPIC THREE - PROFILE ESSAY

If I chose this topic, I feel as though I would write about my best friend, Nick Livingston. I would interview his family members and get an even deeper knowledge of his early life and then relate that to the Nick Livingston I know today.
